Four ways to explore the forests and underground landscapes
From the former UN survey trail to stalactite caves, sinkholes and deep forest, we explore Zhangjiajie through walking and nature observation. Your itinerary is shaped around your interests and pace, with time to explore, talk and pause.
We aim to continue the approach of the early explorations of Wulingyuan: walking into the forest, observing rock layers and plants, and understanding how this World Natural Heritage landscape formed and why it matters. We do not plan around how many sights you can visit in a day. We focus on what you experience and discover in each place.
Follow an early survey route into Wulingyuan’s sandstone peaks
Walk the route used during the United Nations’ earlier survey of Wulingyuan, through the forest park’s sandstone peaks and valleys. Survey markers remain along the way. Today, many visitors use lifts or cable cars, and this trail is less commonly included in conventional sightseeing itineraries.
This is our most distinctive experience in Zhangjiajie. Walk the old trail to observe rock layers, forest and changes in the landscape, and learn how the sandstone peaks formed. A more unhurried pace offers a view of Wulingyuan beyond its viewing platforms.
Experience highlights: Survey history, sandstone geology and forest hiking
Who it suits: Travellers who want to step away from busy visitor routes and understand this World Natural Heritage landscape in greater depth
Observe underground landscapes that are still taking shape
Enter a cave and observe stalactites, water droplets and rock-wall details from permitted viewing positions. Natural-history interpretation explains how water and minerals gradually shape the underground landscape.
We leave time for observation and questions, helping you understand how caves form and why these landscapes need protection. Keep an appropriate distance throughout the visit, without touching or collecting cave deposits.
Experience highlights: Stalactite observation, cave geology and nature learning
Who it suits: Travellers interested in the underground world and the processes that shape it
Explore the scale of a sinkhole, from the surface towards its depths
Existing rope and cave-team photographs illustrate the activity theme, not a confirmed sinkhole route.
Approach a sinkhole to observe its steep rock walls and the space extending below. Different heights and viewpoints reveal its changing scale.
The form of exploration is chosen for the specific route, conditions on site and your abilities. Where ropes are involved, we explain participation requirements, equipment and preparation before the trip, so you understand the activity you will join.
Experience highlights: Sinkhole landforms, vertical space and outdoor exploration
Who it suits: Travellers who want to experience different terrain and are willing to understand and follow the activity requirements
Walk into forest beyond the usual visitor routes
In areas where activities are permitted, enter forest that has not been developed as a conventional sightseeing route. Slow down to observe understory plants, the layers of the trees and signs of wildlife activity.
This experience focuses on forest ecology. We help you understand the life and environment between the sandstone peaks, for a quieter experience of Zhangjiajie, closer to nature.
Experience highlights: Forest ecology, plant observation and quiet hiking
Who it suits: Travellers who enjoy nature observation and want to spend more time in the forest
Drawing on the Dimai Exploration Nature Education Base, we bring local route experience into itinerary planning and help you choose the exploration that suits you.
From sandstone-peak formation to cave deposits and forest ecology, each experience has a clear observation theme, helping you understand the place as you enjoy its landscapes.
Choose any of the four experiences individually or combine them with Zhangjiajie’s classic sights. We plan a suitable pace around your interests, fitness, travelling companions and available time.
Through our cooperation with the Blue Sky Rescue Team, we place importance on route assessment and emergency preparation. Before the trip, we explain activity conditions, equipment needs and participation requirements.
Tell us your travel dates, group size, the experiences that interest you, and your hiking or outdoor experience. We will discuss suitable routes and combinations with you.
Routes and activities depend on opening arrangements, weather and participant conditions. All experiences follow nature conservation requirements.
